Whole Wheat Flour

Over time the integrity of our (once healthy) grains have been compromised by the overuse of pesticides and modification to be resistant to weed killer. Use this flour in moderation and know the company you are purchasing from to ensure the best quality.

Substitute white flour with white wheat flour using 3/4 white whole wheat flour for every 1 cup of white flour, you may need to add 2 teaspoons of liquid to recipe if too dry.

I recommend Jovial Einkhorn Wheat Flour or One Degree Sprouted Wheat Flour.

Oat Flour

Finely ground oats should NOT be used as a 1:1 replacement for white flour. Many of baked goods have gone in the trash in attempts of using straight oats they ended up gross and gummy.

Substitute white flour with a mix of oat flour and whole wheat flour. If recipe calls for 2 cups flour use 1 1/4 cups flour and 1/2 cup finely ground oats.

I recommend Arrowhead Mills Oat Flour.

Spelt Flour

Is a great substitute if you have wheat sensitivities.  It can be easier to digest than whole wheat flour.  It can be more dense and is best used for breads and muffins.

Replace 1 cup white flour to 1 cup spelt flour, but slightly reduce the liquid in your recipe.

I recommend One Degree Spelt Flour.

Buckwheat Flour

Buckwheat flour is a gluten-free flour, but can be tricky in baking.  Breads and pancakes are best choices for this flour.

Best to search for recipes that have already been formulated using buckwheat flour.

 I recommend Anthony’s Buckwheat Flour.

Nut Flours

Best replacement for those who are gluten-free. These flours do not rise and can be gummy and dry if not used correctly.

Best to search for alternatives to your favorite recipes that are created specifically for nut flours.

I recommend Anthony’s Organic Almond Flour.

black Bean Brownies

Bean Flours

Surprisingly, beans make a great, healthier substitution to white flour and add extra protein to your baked goods.  Using chickpea flour for a pizza crust.  Use canned black beans, pureed in a food processor for brownies.

Replace  1 cup flour to 1 cup of bean flour or bean puree in a recipe.

I recommend Just About Chickpea Flour.

Whether your gluten-free or just trying to find better options, there are plenty of  alternatives to chose for a better flour replacement to white flour.
